Monday’s air quality was Mumbai’s best this year

Mumbai take a deep breath. The air quality of the city on Monday evening was one of the best recorded this year at 34.

System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) that monitors Air Quality Index (AQI) at 10 stations in Mumbai showed that all the stations had low levels (Good category) of PM 2.5, which is the smallest size pollutant known to cause respiratory illnesses and worsens the condition of those suffering from ailments like asthma and bronchitis. The PM 2.5 at BKC, which normally reports high levels on Monday recorded PM 2.5 level of 47.

“With the onset of rains and thunderstorms, the wind speed has increased as well as coupled with rains it generally helps in clearing out pollutants resulting in good air quality and currently Mumbai is witnessing the same conditions. On Sunday the AQI was reported as 50 and it has improved considerably on Monday,” said an official from SAFAR.

An AQI level between 0-50 is categorised as Good while 51-100 is Satisfactory and 101-200, 201-300 and 301-400 is in the Moderate, Poor and Very Poor category respectively.

Meanwhile, pre-monsoon showers made a comeback on Monday. As per IMD these spurts of rains will continue and get more intense in the coming days. However, they confirmed that Southwest monsoons have yet not arrives in Maharashtra.
